All portable, hand held and plug in electrical equipment which have a lead with a plug attached, should be routinely tested each year as part of your company’s health & safety programme.

A PAT Testing programme will perform a series of key tests implemented on all portable appliances such as computers, photocopiers, kettles, fridges, extension leads, tools and monitors to confirm whether or not the appliance meets with current electrical standards that were applicable at time of manufacture.

Upon successful completion of testing the electrical appliance will have a label applied which will certify that the appliance is safe to use. Results are logged and a record is kept as proof of testing.

Portable Appliance Test – Key Reasons

  • Health & Safety of you staff
  • Safety of guests and visitors
  • To comply with building insurance policies
  • In compliance with Irish legislation (S.I No.299 of 2007)

Only qualified electricians with appropriate certification should only carry out PAT Testing.

PAT Testing – Employers Responsibilities

The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2007 obliges owners, directors, managers and safety officers in Ireland to ensure the safety of all employees. Section SI 732 requires all appliances to be tested regularly and records maintained for five years.

The onus is on employers to initiate policies ensuring that no hazards or risks occur from portable electrical appliances in the workplace.
